Catching Up, Sort Of…

We are still alive and kicking, down here in hot, still-feels-like-summer Florida!  I just wanted to let you know, in case you were, you know…wondering!

It takes up a lot of my time when I am helping someone learn how our household operates, and when I am teaching them about Isaac.

Our caregiver is working out better than I ever imagined!  It is taking some getting used to, though, having someone else in the house with us.  I have a hard time focusing on my blog, any way.  Some days I feel so anti-social because I just don't have the energy to keep up a running dialogue; but really, I don't think she expects that any ways.

Doug is still fighting off a cold, or allergies, or something.  Isaac and I got rid of the fever and cold, but are still having some coughing and stuffy noses.  It's like the allergens jumped on us after our cold, and we just can't get back to "normal".

Ike had his second week of riding, and just loved it!  We are so excited that he is being able to enjoy this activity again.

Sorry I wasn't able to post a "Creative Spark Friday" post over on my jewelry blog, if you are keeping up with that.  I had the "spark".  I felt the inspiration.  I just didn't have the time to make it happen.  I hope to catch up with it some time this week.

Well, I guess that's it from our house.  I'm praying that it finds everybody doing well at your house.

Blessings,

Alesha

Living Small in a Big World

Some days I feel overwhelmed with s.t.u.f.f. – literal, physical, because-I-went-out-and-bought-it "stuff."

Just this morning, I did an inventory of the electrical appliances in my kitchen.

I found the following:

  • stove
  • refrigerator
  • microwave
  • water distiller
  • air popcorn popper
  • crock-pot
  • roaster oven
  • toaster
  • food processor
  • personal blender
  • hot water dispenser
  • juicer
  • dehydrator
  • bread machine

And these are only the things that are out on a shelf, table or on top of the refrigerator.  In my cabinets you will find the following:

  • blender
  • can opener
  • waffle maker
  • stick blender
  • small food processor

When you consider that my kitchen is 10'x9', has one door opening and one door to the outside, that list is really amazing, isn't it???

We do use almost everything in that first list on a weekly basis, so it really is more efficient to have the appliances out where they are easily accessible.

I think that whoever the person was who created those "appliance garages" in newer home construction was absolutely *brilliant*!

The rest of our home is, likewise, very small (less than 800 square feet of living space); and is also, likewise, jam packed with "stuff".

Due to that, we have obviously had to come up with some "coping mechanisms" – some ways to make this small space work for us and for all of our big stuff.

I know that, these days, many people are trying to simplify.  I thought I'd share a few of my ideas with you.

Plan #1 – The Desk

Hmm…right…we don't have a desk.  If we did have a desk, we would have no room for it.  So what do I do with all of my bills, financial budget, receipts, coupons, and the like?

I use this:

Budgettray

A lap tray.  It can move around the house with me, no matter where I am for the day.  Everything stays tidy and neat.  When Doug has receipts, he put them in the little box (the box in which the bank mailed our checks to us).

The large box (a card sorting box from Hallmark – free with a purchase of so many cards) holds all of 2010 receipts, check stubs, January-July budget pages, and bank statements.

To be honest, that box is very full.  I am hoping to be able to finish out the year with it, but if not, I will store it somewhere and find another box to travel with the lap tray.

I also keep my coupons here, along with bills to be pain, calculator, pen, pencil, checkbook and tithe envelopes.  Everything is right at my finger tips, no matter where I choose to settle to work on the budget.

Where does my budget lap tray roost when it is not in use?  Here:

Budgettray2

It isn't lovely, but it is up out of our way and it doesn't block our view of the tv.  It works for us.

Plan #2 – The Work Bench

I have a business:  a jewelry-making business.  So I need a work bench, right?  Well, yes, a work bench would be absolutely "loverly", as Eliza Doolittle would say!!!

However, if I had one, there is no place to put it in the house.  I live in Florida, so working outside on the porch is not an option for about 9 months of the year.

Here is my solution:

Jewelrycart

A rolling microwave cart

Everything I use to make jewelry, my shipping materials, my books, my photo props, my finished pieces and all my tools and supplies fit on this.

When I work, I can easily move the 2 containers from the top, and use the surface there to work.  I also have another lap tray on which I work most of the time.

This cart can also move around the house with me.  It usually stays parked in my bedroom, in front of the dresser.  I do have plans to clear a corner for it soon, so that we don't have to roll it out of the way to get into the dresser drawers.

So, those are two solutions that we use to help us live small in our big world.

I would love to hear if you have any "small living" solutions!  I can certainly use more ideas on fitting us into the house.  Isaac's equipment will only keep getting bigger, as it has to grow with him; so we will need to make even more space as the years go by.

Please leave me a link here in the comments if you blog on this subject!  I look forward to reading your ideas!

Blessings,

Alesha

One…two…three…four…

…counting my many blessing today.  I thought I'd share my day with you.  I think you will see why I am feeling so blessed today.  Ready, set, here we go!

  • Got up at 6:45 to change Isaac.  Repositioned him in the bed.
  • Drank barley.
  • Read Bible, the book of Exodus, the story of the Red Sea crossing.  Remembered I had an unread email about the subject, and watched the powerpoint presentation which was very interesting.
  • Checked all email accounts, checked Etsy orders, read blog comments, checked Google Analytics and StatCounter for web sites, and check in to Xanga blogs that I follow.
  • Prepared Isaac's feed, juice and meds.  Fed him very quietly because he had fallen asleep (had been up since 4:30 a.m.  I did not get up with him – Doug did!)  Washed up all syringes, tubes and jars.
  • Let Newton out to go potty.

Newton in the sun
 (Newton catchin' some Florida rays)

  • Drank first glass of veggie juice.
  • Rinsed black eyed peas, and put in Crockpot with onion, shallot, salt and Better Than Bouillon.
  • Rinsed chick peas and put in to cook on stove.
  • Checked Facebook, accepted gifts and played games.
  • Rinsed chickpeas, put in fresh water, put back on to finish cooking.
  • Made my way through most of the blogs that I follow – everybody seems to have a lot to say this week. 🙂
  • Made hummus for lunch –  our favorite recipe!
  • Stirred the black eyes peas.
  • Changed Ike who decided to wake up, put in a video, then spent some time talking with my boy whose eyes seem clearer today than they have in some time.
  • Talked to Mama on the phone.  She is feeling better today.  We are still waiting on the results of one more test.  Found out my aunt (my mom's sister) was taken to the hospital on Sunday morning, and tests showed she was having multiple mini strokes.  She is still in the hospital and will probably be released to a nursing home/rehab facility to learn to walk with a walker before she goes back home with my uncle.
  • Took all my vitamins.
  • Chopped up veggies to eat with our hummus.
  • Answered the front door to receive some of Ike's medical supplies.
  • Drank second glass of juice for the day.
  • Prepared Ike's meds, juice and feed.  Fed Isaac.  Changed him, put in a new video.  Washed up.
  • Had lunch with Doug.  Sent veggies and juice with him for an afternoon snack.
  • Gathered veggies and fruit for juicing:  kale, carrots, celery and apples.  Everything was already prepared in baggies, except for the apples.
  • Spent about 30 minutes juicing and cleaning up the mess that it makes. 🙂
  • Stirred the black eyed peas.
  • Checked in with Isaac who needed new toys and some lovin' and repositioning.  We are not able to get him up in his wheelchair yet, because of the shunt.  He still had some stomach issues yesterday due to the pressure, so they said to keep him reclined.  Since I can't get him in and out of the recliner, his bed is the best place to do that.
  • Made afternoon snack:  banana-peach and parsley smoothie.

Green smoothie
(yes, it's green, and yes, it's very yummy!)

  • Peeled all the bananas and broke them up into a freezer bag for smoothies for the rest of the week.
  • Turned on the radio for Isaac, switched his toys again.  It's exciting to me when he gets bored.
  • Downloaded some pics for this blog post, and figured out how to use a new program to edit them.

I have to tell you, my faithful blog readers, I believe I am finally on the mend!  I seem to be getting stronger and my back has not "gone out" since we got the new mattress.  Thank the Lord for that.

I can't remember the last time I had the energy to go through a day like this!!!  It is very exciting to me!

Also, considering that I kept this pace the entire week that Doug was gone, then spent 48 hours at the hospital with my mom over the weekend, I am thrilled to be able to do all that I did today.

I know that so many of you pray for me on a daily basis, and I am so thankful for that.  Don't stop praying yet! ;o)  But now you can add a little praise in there that I am doing so well right now.

It's my plan to get ready and go to church tonight.  Afterwards, we will have choir practice and then I will practice for a duet on Sunday with my friend, Mrs. Sandy.  I should be good and tired by the time this day is over.

I pray your day has been productive, and that you can lay down tonight and count your many blessings.

I know I certainly will!

Happy ike2

Shut the Door, the Air Conditioner’s On!

I am so happy to let you know that my friend, Mrs. C, is at home now, recovering from her month-long ordeal.  She is healing well, so let's pray that continues! 🙂

She is actually the one who suggested I share the following picture with you, after I shared it with her this morning:

Acunit

This is our air conditioning unit, as seen from my bedroom. :)  She is quite a monster, I know!  But she gushes forth lovely, cool air to keep (most of) our house at a moderate temperature.  My dad is eventually going to be ducting those 3 holes to the individual rooms in our house; and the plan is to wall this corner in like a closet with some pretty louvered doors.

So, now that our temperatures have hit the 90's, we are staying nice and cool with our "lovely beast".  I am thanking the Lord for all the ways He is blessing me lately. 🙂

Isaac has been sick for the past 3 weeks.  At first it was just a cold, but it eventually turned into a sinus infection.

And with the illness came the seizures.

I'm sad to tell you about that, really.  I don't want you to be discouraged that we have lost ground again.  It's ok, really.  We had about 2 months of such clarity with him, and we wouldn't trade that for anything.  It was really wonderful.  We don't like the seizures, but they "normal" for Isaac, and we are not complaining.

Here's something yummy we tried today:

Kalesalad

It's called "Sweet Annie Kale Salad" from the recipe book "How We All Went Raw".  It was quite a surprise to us that we both liked it.  Next time, though, I will add more garlic, and substitute craisins for the raisins.  You know I always tweak everything!!! 🙂

I've got a few new smoothie recipes I'll try to share with you soon, too.  We are diligently trying to get back to our healthy eating plan.  We begin to feel lousy and sluggish when we are not sticking with it as we should.

I have been sick for about 2 weeks:  bronchitis, according to my
self-diagnosis.  I am on antibiotic now, but the cough is
l-i-n-g-e-r-i-n-g – unfortunately.  I hope to be back to church and
choir and LIFE soon! 🙂

No new report on Mama Gail.  I'm sure we will be talking with Mike
soon, and will let you know if there has been any change.

Keeping my eyes set on Jesus (because, really, what else is there?),

Around the Neighborhood

My lilies have finally bloomed…just beautifully!

Magnificent!

The air is full of the sweet smell of orange blossoms.

Our neighbor's dog.  Isn't he gorgeous?  We don't know his name, so we, quite imaginatively, call him "Brownie".

My version of a bird bath – vintage terra cotta pot and saucer from my grandmother's house.  It works really well, too.

This is right outside Ike's window.  The birdbath is below it.

The most beautiful thing in our yard – our now functioning air conditioning unit.

Just look at that Florida sky!!!

Mama turtle was taking a tour of our yard this morning.

Baby turtle trying to catch a ride.

Papa is installing a wide gate between our two yards, so that Isaac's wheelchair (and Papa's new riding lawn mower) can go easily from yard to yard.

Newton, sporting his new haircut and bandanna.

And, inside the house, our new mattress set arrived!  It is wonderful, and we love it!!!  We bought this one from here.

How are things in your neighborhood?

🙂

A Short Post From Sunny Florida

  • Isaac's surgery site is healing nicely, and he has been released to his regular activities!  That means, Lord willing, church for the 3 of us on Sunday.  Praise the Lord!
  • We bought a new mattress set, and it will be delivered on next Friday.  THANK YOU to all of you who gave me your opinions and experiences.  I did a lot of research, due to your ideas, and we feel we found the best mattress for us. 🙂 Pictures to follow, after it's delivered.
  • I had a brutal visit with my chiropractor on Monday, but I am reaping the rewards of that now.  My legs are finally the same length again, and – wonder of wonders! – that does miraculous things for my muscles!  Go figure! 🙂
  • We are spending lots of time outside in this beautiful weather.  Soon, it will be much too hot to be outside, except first thing in the morning, so we are trying to soak up all the rays we can now.  Isaac and I are both sporting pink noses and cheeks, and we look so much better for it! 😉
  • I pray that you have a wonderful weekend, and that you are able to be in your church on Sunday.  I am looking forward - with GREAT anticipation – to being in mine. :~D

Blessings,

Alesha

Library Staircase

If you love books as much as I do, you will appreciate this architect's ingenuity.  I saw this picture and knew I needed to see more of it.

THIS is the story.

Here's the picture to pique your interest:
