When You Are Feeling Shattered

“God said, ‘My grace is sufficient for thee,’ for in your weakness My strength is made perfect. In your brokenness, My light shines forth. In your affliction, My power flows out. In your brokenness and insufficiency, My sufficiency is evidenced. In your lack of power, My power is seen.”

“Many times those who are unbroken sit in judgment of those whom God has broken. He has shattered them and leveled them and taken all their pride away. Now they are more useful than ever. Instead of us praising God for His grace and the usefulness, we sit in judgment of the shattering experience.”

“Those that have broken hearts and shattered dreams, those whose lives have been leveled, make the best servants of God because they realize that they have nothing of their own.”

“God can get more glory out of you when you praise Him in brokenness, than when you praise Him on the mountaintop. Anybody can praise God in the good times, but when you are broken, your will is broken, your life is broken, your dreams are shattered, and you praise God, He gets more glory.” (excerpts “Weathering the Storms of Life” by Dennis Corle)

In this season of Thanksgiving, even if you are broken and shattered, give God the glory. He is preparing you for great things when everything that YOU are is out of His way to make room for all that HE is.

Encouragement from an Unlikely Source

I was changing Isaac today, getting him a dry diaper and clean clothes (and if you need to know why I am helping my 14-year-old son do these things, you can read his story here).

I was saying the usual things I say to him as I go through our routine.  On most days it's a running one-sided dialogue:

"Alright, here we go!
"Wet pants off. Wash, wash….ooooo, it's cold.  Brrrrrr.
"Ok.  Rolly-Olly, dry diaper on.  Rolly back.
"Don't pinch Mommy!  No!  Ouch!  Stop it, Isaac!

"Here, this foot in.  Other foot.  Now rolly again.  Pants up.
"Are you ready to change your shirt?  This arm out first, good job, over the head now.  Whoop!  And the other arm.  All right!"

And then from the living room I heard our African Gray parrot, Poppet, talking.

"Very nice.  Very niiiiiiiice.
"Good job, Isaac!  Good joooooob!
"Here we go!  Here we go!
"Verrry nice!  Good work!

It's nice to know that I've said the right things often enough that the bird has memorized them.

I've been encouraging in the past.  I've sounded sweet and kind to Isaac many times.  I've talked him through dressing and eating and therapy many, many times.

So, on that one day when I feel like a failure, when I know *for a fact* that I'm the world's worst mom, I'm going to remember the day I was encouraged by the bird – a bird who only learned the things that it heard.

Do you have a bird who talks?  If you did, what kinds of things would it be learning to say???

A Song of Praise

We are all doing better – Yay!  Doug's energy is returning.  Isaac was very vocal last night, singing with the radio and fussing when he dropped his toys, so I'm thinking he's feeling better too! ;)  I am also feeling a little bit better, and think I might just live through this.  When I do, I think I deserve a t-shirt:  "I Survived the Flu 2012!", don't you?!! 🙂

I have a song swirling around in my head this morning.  My sweet friend sang it at church last night, and as I watched the service via the internet, I was so touched by the truth of the song, as if it were the first time I was hearing it.  I thought it might be a blessing to you too. :)

This is the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, the first group I ever heard sing the song.  Damaris Carbaugh is the soloist.

Heaven’s Sounding Sweeter

Just a quick update here:

My grandmother (Daddy's mom) passed away this morning.  She went very quickly, and we are so thankful to know that she is with the Lord now!

Our precious friend, Lane, is spending his final days with family and friends gathered close.  He even dictated to his son a final goodbye for Facebook last night.  It was incredibly poignant, as he pointed his friends to Jesus as the only way to Salvation and a home in Heaven.

I was told this morning that he is sleeping more and eating less today.  They are reading the comments from his FB page to him, as they come in.  The comments have been incredibly sweet, as they honor the Godly man that Lane has been to so many in his life.

Our little friend, Joshua, is still in the hospital.  His red- and white-blood cell counts are a little better, but his platelet count continues to stay low, in spite of 8 transfusions.  They began week 5 of their hospital stay yesterday.  Please keep praying!

Here on the homefront, Isaac is still not sleeping.  He stays awake for over 30 hours before he crashes for 2-6 hours; then he starts the whole process again.  Doug is exhausted, as he is averaging 4 hours of sleep each night.  I have been able to stay up and check on Ike the last few nights, but as soon as he goes potty, Doug has to get up to change him.

My back is still "out"…I wish I could go out as often as it does!!!  I have another chiropractic appointment tomorrow…hoping it will help again.

One of my favorite memories of my grandmother (who I called "Meme") was that she would take me shopping occasionally.  I remember one year, we went shopping for my winter coat. Afterwards, we stopped to eat at a restaurant – a real treat back then.  I remember having a cheeseburger and french fries – my carb-loving days started early!  I just recall how special I felt to be the focus of the trip and to be sharing that special time with her.

She will certainly be missed…and the thoughts of Heaven get more exciting all the time.  So many friends and loved ones will be there.  Are you 100% sure that YOU will be there one day?  If you have any doubts at all, I would be honored to share with you how I can be so sure.  Just email me or leave a comment here.

Blessings,

Alesha

Just a Few Things

This looked really yummy to us.  We will definitely be trying it soon.

Berry Quick Citrus Iced Tea

I thought you might be interested in the recipe to my "All Purpose Floor Cleaner UPper":

In a spray bottle mix the following:

A few squirts of your favorite liquid soap (I prefer Basic H from Shaklee)

1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar

Water to fill bottle

This is what I have been using to clean up the puppy puddles on my floors.  I have also used it on any area rugs that were "sprinkled" as well.  It is a great spot cleaner for other spills too.  The vinegar smell is pretty strong when first sprayed, but it disipates very quickly.

This was an interesting article about how microwave ovens cook:

Microwave Oven Diagnostics with Indian Snack Food

I had always wondered about that.

All 3 of us are recuperating nicely, praise the Lord!

Wishing you a lovely evening (or morning!),

Alesha

Thoughtful Thursday

Today I am thinking:

  • I hate summer colds
  • I am SO thankful for air conditioning
  • Isaac has been such a good boy since we have no caregiver here
  • I have only cleaned up ONE puddle today
  • Our pup is finally learning to "ring the bell!"
  • Tomorrow is Doug's school's orientation.  He is very psyched.
  • Buy one get one for a penny is an AWESOME deal at McDs
  • Corrupt local politicians are demanding my time today, and I really don't appreciate needing to fill out paperwork due to their unethical behavior – grrrr…
  • Isaac is talking back to Bro. Lewis on the radio — TOO funny!!!
  • I am loving Doug's shorter hours
  • I am so glad we didn't have to rush the pup to the vet's today when she had a run-in with the big dog's lead line out in the yard.  She was definitely hurt, but was up playing within the hour
  • I am glad we are seeing the vet on Saturday for all her puppy shots anyway, so we can get her looked over
  • I Corinthians 10:23 – "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not."
  • I'm trying to remember that verse when it comes to food
  • I am so glad that tomorrow is Friday…bring on the weekend!!!

One Year in Heaven

A year ago today, my friend Gail went to Heaven to meet Jesus.

It has not been an easy year.

I still miss her so much, and it seems hard still to believe that she is not just a phone call or an email away.

But today, I am just wondering…

What would you do to celebrate your first anniversary in Heaven?!!

Please don't be offended with my crazy theology here!  I realize that Heaven does not use our clock or calendar or almanac…God's time is so beyond our comprehension!  If a thousand years is as one day to Him, then one year's time must seem like a few seconds at the most.  I do understand and believe that!

But for today, I just need to believe that Gail and Jesus might be sitting on the bank of the crystal river, fishing poles in hand, a picnic basket nearby and a choir of angels with banjos and fiddles performing in a heavenly bandstand behind them, while Gail keeps times by splashing her toes in the water.

Just for today…that's what I need to think about; because when I think about her not being here it still hurts too much.

One year in Heaven…I know she must be having the time of her life; because really, when we arrive there, we will begin truly living for the first time in our lives!

Sing the wondrous love of Jesus,
Sing His mercy and His grace;
In the mansions bright and blessed
He’ll prepare for us a place
Refrain:
When we all get to heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the victory!
While we walk the pilgrim pathway,
Clouds will overspread the sky;
But when trav’ling days are over,
Not a shadow, not a sigh.
Refrain:
When we all get to heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the victory!
Let us then be true and faithful,
Trusting, serving every day;
Just one glimpse of Him in glory
Will the toils of life repay.
Refrain:
When we all get to heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the victory!
Onward to the prize before us!
Soon His beauty we’ll behold;
Soon the pearly gates will open;
We shall tread the streets of gold.
Refrain:
When we all get to heaven,
What a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,
We’ll sing and shout the victory!
