A Prayer Request

Please pray for my friend, Gail…known to those who love her as "Mama Gail".

She has completed chemo treatment for lymphoma, and has received a clean CAT/PET scan.

However, she is now hospitalized with pneumonia.  Her recovery is also complicated by Hepatitis C.  There are also some other very serious issues that have arisen that have the doctors very concerned.

Also, please pray for her husband Mike, who is understandably worried, and who is dealing with health issues of his own.

Thank you so much,

Alesha

Let the Home Schooling Begin!

It's been a busy week for us here in HOT, sunny Florida.  Summer has arrived right on schedule and we are already seeing temperatures in the mid-90s – which is as it should be!  It is Florida, after all.

This is the first week, since I was down with my back, that I have tried to integrate caring for Isaac and actually doing a little house work too.  That's why I haven't been here blogging – just too busy!  It seems that everything takes me twice as long as it did before.

On Tuesday, while Doug and Isaac went to therapy, my Dad took Mama and I to the dentist.  Now doesn't that sound like a fun outing???  I was glad to be with good company, but would have rather gone shopping or something! :)

The rest of the week I spent trying to keep Isaac in dry ribbons!  He is a chewing maniac these days.  It's so funny after almost 3 years of putting nothing in his mouth, he has constantly got something he's trying to chew on.

We have been working on his relearning some things this past week.  We're starting with the word "gentle".  He is really giving his therapists a difficult time, and has started swatting at them when they stretch or move something in a way that he doesn't like.  He doesn't have much control, and so the swatting can really hurt.  Even when he's playing with me, now, he whacks and doesn't realize how hard it is.  So, we are working on "gentle".

I am also working with him on retrieving his own toys when he loses track of them.  His default behavior is to whine – repeatedly – quietly – yet with every breath – until I come and "fix" whatever is wrong.  Whether he wants a different video, or to listen to the radio, or if he needs dry pants, he just does his "nagging" as I call it.

So, I am trying to prompt him, when I know he's just misplaced his toys, to find them for himself.  Usually they are up under his arm, and he has a hard time finding them, because he can't see them.  I help him to reach over with his opposite hand to find them.  I am also helping him to sit up and reach down the bed for them, when he's just tossed them beyond his reach.  He is always so delighted when he gets them.

We are also teaching him the word "drink".  I am using his lemon swabs to give him tastes of different juices.  He gets a little of the liquid without my pouring it into his mouth, which could cause him to aspirate.  Some days he wants several "drinks" and other days he's not interested; but since it's getting so hot, I thought it was a good things to work on.  He drools so much when he chews on toys, and I don't want him to get dehydrated in this weather.

So, I guess I sorta-kind started Isaac's home school lessons again, didn't I?  I really didn't realize it, until I started telling you all about them.  These are the sorts of things we worked on before, although in greater number each week.  We will add things each week, as he understands more and more.

Today, he enjoyed baked sweet potato with me for lunch.  He chewed and swallowed every bite.  Doug said none of it ended up on his bib!  (He used to taste things, but then let them slide out of his mouth instead of swallowing.)  Sweet potato used to be his favorite baby food, too!  We're on the right track, I'd say! 🙂

I am looking forward to my fresh, new week.  I am especially praying for my sweet friend, Mrs. C, who is recovering from surgery.  I'm also praying for a friend's son, who seems to be straying from the Lord.  You know it is never too late to ask for God to draw the prodigal back home.  He is a loving, gracious and forgiving God – as I can personally testify!

May you see God's Hand in your life this week, as He moves to accomplish His will in you!

Isaac’s Surgery Update

Isaac came through surgery really well.

All of the tubing for his shunt had to be replaced, from head to belly.

He has a small incision on his belly, and one on the back of his head (about 3 inches), and a mean looking bruise on the side of his neck and over his collarbone where they "tunneled" the new tubing.

He is still quite drowsy, but is resting and is very peaceful when he wakes up.  The meds seem to be managing the pain quite well.

Thank you for praying.  Thank you for letting me know you were praying.  Reading those comments this morning was so reassuring to me.

I will try to get back regularly with updates.  It is possible that we might be let go tomorrow.  That would be good, but we do not rush things.  We'd rather stay a little longer just to be sure all is going well.

God bless you all,

Alesha

Pray for Isaac – Surgery on Friday

Isaac was admitted to the hospital this evening.

He will have surgery tomorrow.

Apparently, the tubing that goes from his shunt (in his head) to his abdomen is blocked.  That will need to be repaired, replaced, or something.

His neurosurgeons are awesome, and he will be in good hands, surgically speaking.

We also know that The Great Physician will be overseeing the surgery.  That is even more important, and that knowledge fills me with peace.

We would really appreciate your prayers.

Blogging Bullets

  • Our new a/c unit is up and running!!!  That should make our electric bill much happier!
  • My back has gone out again.
  • I made some new jewelry and sold some jewelry last week.
DSCN0322

  • I've made some jewelry repairs this week, too.
  • Isaac has been trying to vomit since yesterday evening.  (His previous
surgery does not allow him to actually bring anything up.)  We think
it's due to a decrease in meds (on purpose…we were weaning him off a
gastro med), and we hope as soon as the levels go back up, he will stop
trying to turn himself inside out with the dry heaves.
  • I got a new hair cut.  Here's some of those corny "taking pictures of myself in the car" shots:

  • My mom and I were able to have brunch together yesterday.
  • The weather here is absolutely gorgeous right now.
  • This made me happy:

 Gerbers

  • Isaac made a new friend at church on Sunday.  She came in her wheelchair, and sat with him in junior church.  She was 8 years old and such a cutie!  He was really quite pleased about it too.
  • That is all I can think of for today.  It's hard to write brilliantly from a reclined position!

Spring is on its way,

Blessings and Prayers

The Lord has been good to our family this week.

Mind you, He is always good to us; but the blessings seem especially tangible today.

A wonderful friend of ours has completely rebuilt our old computer into something of a Super PC!  We have been wanting another computer.  You know the difficulties I've had with my laptop, this past year in particular.

Computer

We knew we would have no money for a new laptop, and so we put those desires to the back of our mind for a while.  Our friend, though, took my old desktop and (I think) just gutted it and started over!  It's bigger and faster and more advanced than my laptop, and will meet our needs and then some!  Doug is really excited to have his "own" computer, and I am thrilled to have something reliable.

Today, my hubby got the opportunity to help referee a high school basketball game.  That might not mean much to you and me; but to my hubby, it is very exciting!

What music is to me, basketball is to Doug.  He loves watching it, coaching it, playing it, reffing it, whatever…it makes him happy.  It has been years since he's been able to do anything even remotely involved with the game, and so today's opportunity really means a lot to him.

As he left, he poked his head back in the door, and said, "I'm going to go…have some FUN!" with a great big smile on his face. 🙂

We learned yesterday that we will be receiving a healthy tax refund this year.  We are praying that God will help us to find a vehicle for Isaac.  Right now, we drive a '94 Ford Explorer.  It has been a very reliable vehicle for us; but it is not accessible.  Doug has to pick Isaac up and put him in his car seat, then lift the wheelchair into the back of the truck.  I am unable to take Isaac anywhere on my own.

We realize that to get a truly accessible vehicle will be well out of our price range, but we also know that we serve a mighty God!  He can help us to find something that will make our lives easier, AND that has an air conditioner that works reliably!!!  (Right now, we have to lift the hood and whack the fuse box for the a/c to work!) 🙂 We also have no door handles left – they have disintegrated into nothing – lol!

So, three blessings for us this week, and a prayer request of sorts.  We need God's leading and wisdom to find this new vehicle.  We'd appreciate your helping us pray.

Thanks!!!

Whew What A Week!

Wow!  It has been quite the week for us!  On Tuesday, I came down with the dreaded stomach flu.  It was awful, and here on Friday evening, I am just beginning to feel a tiny bit "normal".  I think the fever was worse than the tummy troubles.

Isaac has continued to run a low-grade fever, which called for a doctor's visit on today.  He has a whopper of a sinus infection.  The doctor gave him a 20-DAY antibiotic prescription!  I am truly dreading the results of that medication on his gastrointestinal track.  It will cause GREAT havoc, I'm afraid.

Our radio's Restorathon is still going strong.  So far, they have had over $74,000 pledged to keep the station on the air for another year.  That is really exciting, and we're expecting tomorrow to be an even bigger day than the last two.  Praise the Lord for the work He is doing here.

Let me tell you, by way of personal testimony, the radio station is a real blessing to me!  I have spent the past 3 days in bed, and I was so grateful to have great Christian music and programing to listen to. 🙂

I pray ya'll have a good weekend,

Alesha
